Damian Williams Announces Resignation as U.S. Attorney

On Monday, November 25th, Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced he would resign from his position at 11:59 p.m. on December 13. Appointed in 2021 as the first Black U.S. Attorney for the district, Williams made history as one of its youngest leaders. During his tenure, he oversaw numerous high-profile cases, including the conviction of Senator Robert Menendez and prosecutions of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, Mayor Eric Adams, and rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Williams, 44, expressed mixed emotions about his departure, calling it a “bittersweet day.” In a statement, he described his role as his “dream job,” noting his pride in the office’s commitment to excellence, integrity, and independence. Following his resignation, his deputy, Edward Kim, will serve as Acting U.S. Attorney. Williams also emphasized his confidence in the continued high performance of the office under Kim’s leadership.

President-elect Donald Trump has already announced plans to nominate Jay Clayton, former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, to replace Williams. The nomination, however, requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate. Clayton is expected to bring his extensive experience in securities law to the role, potentially marking a shift in priorities for the Southern District.

Williams’ resignation comes amid ongoing high-stakes prosecutions. Mayor Adams faces allegations tied to corruption, while Combs is embroiled in a sex trafficking case. Despite these unresolved cases, Williams assured that the office remains well-equipped to handle the complexities of its docket.

Reflecting on his legacy, Williams highlighted the honor of serving the American people and his commitment to justice. His tenure has been lauded for tackling significant cases with a high degree of professionalism, solidifying his reputation as a formidable federal prosecutor.

As the Southern District prepares for its transition in leadership, Williams’ departure marks the end of an impactful chapter. His achievements underscore the critical role of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in addressing complex legal challenges and upholding justice.
